How it all started...
Oak Ridge Baptist Church started with a small group Bible study in 1979. Pastor Marty Marriott came to Oak Ridge after finishing seminary training. He felt led to begin a Bible-based work here in Oak Ridge. After the Bible study grew, Oak Ridge Baptist Church chartered in September of 1980. Pastor Marriott’s burden was to see a church that relied solely on the Word of God for its’ faith and practices.
Three years after beginning with a Bible study, the church built a facility on LaSalle Road in the heart of Oak Ridge. God grew the church over the next 20 years, and in 2005, the church purchased 12.21 acres on Bethel Valley Road. They built a new facility and relocated the ministry to be more accessible and more visible in order to reach this community for Christ. This beautiful piece of property is but a tool to remind us that we are truly committed to declare Christ in our community and develop believers in the church.
In the Fall of 2001, ORBC called Pastor Tom Craig to be the senior pastor. This was yet another step the church has taken to continue the vision of a Bible-based ministry in this area. Pastor Craig served the church as Pastor for 14 years. But, in 2014 Tom was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The doctors gave him six months to live. The church walked through three months of aggressive cancer treatments, but in September of 2014, Pastor Tom went home to be with the Lord. Through those difficult days, the church learned to trust God and walk together through deep suffering as God took their shepherd home to be with Him.
In the summer of 2015 the church voted for Bobby McCoy to become the senior pastor. Pastor Bobby has a heart for the Oak Ridge community and the surrounding region. Bobby has served at ORBC since 2004 and is thankful that God has knitted his heart to the community. In 1999 Bobby faced a life-altering car accident that would forever change his life.
